Student-Driven Campus Design:
Student-Driven Campus Design Reflection
This project has been about understanding the design thinking process as well as what goes into the design of a building. We were able to learn the different steps involved in successfully creating a building and how design thinking is incorporated into that process creating a more successful final product. This project has been a way for us to see how working outside of school works. For this project we had to design our own campus conforming to student needs and wants. We started this project by doing empathy interviews, the first step in the design thinking process. These interviews consisted of asking people not for answers but asking to understand the person. We then used these interviews to start our prototyping phase. We created multiple prototypes receiving feedback after each one and implementing that feedback into the next prototypes. After creating many prototypes we began to work on a mock up poster. Once those were created we received feedback and created our final product in photoshop. The final product consisted of photoshop poster with our budget sheet, sales pitch, renderings, metaphor, and our proposal. This project taught use how to utilize the design thinking process into a real environment to create a successful product.
Throughout this project I have taken away lots of valuable knowledge. The most prominent takeaway I had was learning about the human centered design process. Before this project I would always interview for answers. After spending time looking into empathy interviews and trying them on people I realized how much more you could draw out of someone if you take time to digest their stories. This allowed me to understand more than just what they wanted but how badly they wanted it and why. I was able to get the main idea our group went with out of these interviews. After interviewing multiple people I came to one general consensus both students, parents, and teachers all wanted more outdoor space and time throughout the school day. Then after listening to a middle school student they gave me the idea of the outdoor classroom. After listening to their story I learned that she loved having an outdoor classroom in elementary school and wished that her middle school had this. I learned that it allowed students to become more creative as well as increased attentiveness.
I noticed that my group worked continuously better with each other throughout the project. Towards the beginning of the project I did not take a leadership role and neither did anyone else in the group which caused us to wander and not be completing important tasks. I noticed this was happening and decided to take the role of being a leader in our group. This was a very new experience for me, normally I don’t get involved with my groups during projects like this and try to take on all the work. Since this project had so many different aspects I knew the only way for our project to turn out successful was to delegate the tasks along our group members. This lead me into a role of leadership. Near the end of the project I felt comfortable being a leader and our group began to work more efficiently and were able to create a more professional final product.
This project has been very relevant mainly because of the need for students to have a say in what their school. The school's purpose is to be an area that revolves around students as well as an area that conforms to their needs and wants. To create an effective learning environment students must be interested and the best way to do this to allow students to have a say in the design of their campus.
